DWIGHT L. MOODY (1837-1899) was a highly acclaimed late 19th century evangelist. He founded the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago in 1886 and the Bible Institute Colportage Association, now Moody Publishers, in 1894. From training women, to reaching out to lost children, to bridging the gap between denominations, D.L. Moody was unlike any other. He is author of a number of books including Christ in You, Heaven, Men God Challenged, and Spiritual Power. His life is also chronicled in A Passion for Souls: The Life of D.L. Moody by Lyle Dorsett. He and his wife, Emma, had three children.
He traded business success for evangelism and by his death in 1900, he had spoken before more than 100 million people. Not a day dawns or passes without some allusion to Moody being made by a preacher or a Bible teacher; not a week comes and goes unmarked by some mention of one or another of the institutions he founded.
'The secrets of Dwight L. Moody's power were; First, a definite experience of Christ's saving grace; he had passed out of death into life, and he knew it. Secondly, he believed in the divine authority of the scriptures; the Bible was to him the voice of God. Thirdly, he was baptized with the Holy Spirit. Fourthly, he was a man of prayer; he believed in a mighty and unfettered God. Fifthly, he believed in works, in ceaseless effort, in the power of organization.'-C.I. Scofield
